Six Flags Great Adventure Opening Day #49 !

4/1/2022

0 Comments

Team,

Every week I share images of the hard work that has gone into the preparations for our 49th theme park opening day.
Knowing that is only the physical plant side of the planning and preparations, we appreciate all the planning and efforts along the way during our seemingly short off-season.
As much as we want everything to be perfect, we always find a few things that are not quite finished or system glitches that may present themselves.
Do not get frustrated. Time will heal all concerns…and we have plenty more projects and openings to look forward to in the coming month!
I want to thank everyone from our Directors-Managers-Supervisors down to our front line teams for all of the efforts to date.
A special thank you to Maintenance, who handles the brunt of many of our initiatives while also preparing our rides for another year of high-volume operations.

Now we must all switch gears and focus on servicing our Guests starting with the first car at our tolls tomorrow morning!
Guests come from dozens to hundreds of miles away, pay us the amount they can afford to pay, and spend very long hours with us.
They visit us to escape the real-world external pressures, so we owe it to them to show them a great time.
How do we do that?  Smiles! Kindness! Courtesy! Guidance!...said differently…Friendly-Clean-Fast-Safe Service!
That is the same strategy that we have all been taught growing up…how you treat family!
Let’s focus on teaching our Guests the new things we have now and the new things up and coming.
We have more technology at play…more QR codes…more cell-phone based systems that will help guide and educate.
We have more seating, more shade, more ambience based focal points and beautification with summer landscaping.
We have more environment friendly strategies, which is why we have eliminated paper maps and a lot of signage!
We have more focus on speed of ride lines with single-rider lines at our hero rides.
We have more focus on food lines, easily seen with our beverage filling strategy away from the sales areas.
We have more equipment to help keep the park clean…and you have already seen a glimpse of the change in strategy there…our Park Services team has been performing awesome!
We have more lockers at our hero rides to help expedite the Guests to the ride lines.
…and much more…with so much more to come!

Our CEO has asked us to focus heavily on 6 strategies.  I would say we have checked off those boxes heavily out of the gates!

1. Improve and Elevate Guest Experience
•      Reducing wait times at rides
•      Reducing ride down time
•      All rides open when our 1st guest arrives
2. Create Fun through Employee Friendliness
•      Treat our guests like family
•      Be your best
•      Be happy
•      Smile, smile, smile
3. Park Cleanliness
•      Better curb appeal at the front gate
•      Better landscaping
•      Cleaner restrooms
4. Better Quality Food
•      Hot and fresh
•      Healthy
•      Grilled items
•      Better coffee
5. More Guest Amenities
•      More benches
•      More shade areas
6. Upgrade Technology
•      Skip the line
•      Flash passes
•      Ordering food

With that, let’s proudly show our Guests our renovations at Yum-yum and Granny’s restaurants.
They will have seen our beautiful new entry experience.
Point out our new seating…and don’t forget the new planter seats in front of Metro restrooms.
Point out our newly painted Batman and Medusa!
Point out our Safari drive-thru has 5-,iles of new roadway and lots of baby animals right now!
Point out our new Sweet Treats Starbucks coffee at the front mall, that opened late last year and most have not seen it.
Point out our new gift shop themes at Wild Things (Jr. Thrillseekers area) and Adventure Gifts near the fountain!
Point out our new orange color on the Attitudes tent that brightens up our days!
Point out our new Safari Tours for those who want a special experience…and yes, a separate ticket is required.
Picture
Picture
A few attractions will not be ready for our opening weekend.  Subject to change, but here is our list.
1.     Log Flume (supply chain)
2.     Medusa (re-theme)
3.     Zumajaro (supply chain)
4.     Twister/Top Spin (continued off-season routine maintenance)
5.     Wonder Woman (supply chain)
6.     Rapids (summer ride)
Picture
You will also find strategic food locations towards each end of the park that we will not use initially…this is normal.
We have more than enough open to handle the early Spring crowds.

In closing…thank you all again for preparing our 49th opening!

Enjoy the day tomorrow…and keep us safe!

New Press Release
Six Flags Great Adventure Announces Guest Enhancements Including
New Rides, Food, Events and Animal Encounters for 2022

Park complex to unveil its largest array of improvements in history

JACKSON, N.J. ─ March 2, 2022 ─ In 2022, the Six Flags Great Adventure property will celebrate the largest array of improvements in the parks’ nearly 50-year history, featuring robust enhancements to the guest experience including new dining, rides, events and animal experiences.
Six Flags’ investment will feature beautification and modernization efforts throughout the world-class theme park and Wild Safari. Details include increased capacity and streamlined operations in rides, food service, and admissions; new theming and reintroduction of several popular rides for daredevils and junior thrill seekers; aesthetic and comfort enhancements in both parks; the debut of popular food brands and new dining options; a major summer event and more guest amenities.
“Our largest range of enhancements in nearly five decades will focus on improving our guests’ experience through technology, innovation, and renovation,” said Park President John Winkler. “As the Northeast’s premier family entertainment destination, we’re laser-focused on providing incredible guest service in a beautiful, modern, and state-of-the art environment.”
Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari’s 2022 additions include:
  • Jr. Thrillseekers – Great Adventure will complete the two-year renovation of this action-packed section. Formerly Safari Kids, the park’s largest family area will offer eight rides, all perfect for parents to enjoy with their little ones, like Lil’ Devil Coaster—the kiddie counterpart to Jersey Devil Coaster—and Barnstormer, returning for 2022.  The section will also feature shopping, dining, and new, shaded seating;
  • The Return of Medusa – Thrill seekers will delight in the return of the snake-haired Gorgon to Frontier Adventures—a seven-looping beast unveiled in 1999 as the world’s first floorless, top-rail roller coaster, Medusa. The ride was re-branded to BIZARRO™ 10 years later, but will return in its original form with a new color palette, logo, and Gold Rush-era backstory;
  • Single Rider Lines – To shorten wait times by filling in every available seat, single rider lines enable rides to operate with the maximum number of guests. This feature will be added to Jersey Devil Coaster, El Toro, Nitro and Medusa;
  • Q SMART Technology – To improve the guest experience through enhanced ride line speed and efficiency, Six Flags will transition its’ THE FLASH™ Pass Q-bot to mobile Q SMART technology. From the convenience of a mobile phone and the ease of an app, with the touch of a button guests will be able to maximize their time in the park, spending less time waiting in line and more time enjoying rides, dining, shopping, and entertainment;
  • Enhanced Mobile App – A new mobile app feature that allows guests to add their pass to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet will expedite the front gate experience and reduce wait time;
  • “Wow” Moments – In 2022, more emphasis will be placed on creating “Wow” moments through fun and memorable guest interactions, beautiful landscaping views, additional seating for relaxation, and a massive, new marquee on Rt. 537;
  • Restaurant Makeovers – Two of the park’s largest indoor restaurants, Yum Yum Café and Granny’s, will reopen with an entirely new interior look. New floors, décor, menu boards, and traffic flow will enhance the dining experience;
  • Fatburger® – Since 1952, Fatburger has been serving delicious, made-to-order food. Now with more than 200 locations worldwide, Fatburger will deliver hot and fresh treats like juicy burgers, creamy milkshakes, and crispy onion rings to guests in Adventure Alley;
  • New Dining Options – The park will expand its culinary options with freshly roasted rotisserie chicken added to the menu at Granny’s, freshly-brewed coffee creations at Sweet Treats, proudly serving Starbucks® and many additional high quality offerings;
  • Family Restroom – To better accommodate the needs of all guests, the theme park will introduce two new family restrooms to the Adventure Alley section;
  • Volta Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – Compatible with all electric vehicles, units will be available in the theme park, water park and safari parking lots;
  • New Pavilions – The park’s high-tech, touchless security screening entry area and the popular Johnny Rocket’s outdoor dining patio will sport new wooden pavilion shade coverings;
  • Summer Vibes Festival – As sun-kissed dreams come to life, guests will drench themselves in a kaleidoscope of color at this new, summer festival, which will run July 16 to August 14. Mouth-watering treats, beat-the-heat beverages, bold, eye-popping spectacles, live entertainment, and colorful curiosities will immerse guests in the reverie of summer;
  • New Animal Adventures – The Wild Safari’s animal care team welcomes three new giraffe calves, a new male rhinoceros, and an array of spring babies. The Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure will feature an entirely new audio tour guests can stream from any mobile device and an expanded, three-lane roadway with five newly paved miles;
  • New ‘Giraffe Encounter’ Safari VIP Tour – Great Adventure theme park will launch a new safari VIP experience, the Giraffe Encounter Tour. This off-road adventure on military-style, open-air trucks will feature an informative and engaging tour guide through seven sections of the Wild Safari and the opportunity to hand-feed giraffes at Wild Safari’s Camp Aventura. Tour guests can also meet small exotic animals up-close. Tour tickets may be purchased in advance or at the park; and
  • BATMAN™ The Ride – The epic, floorless, chairlift-style BATMAN The Ride will return with a bold, shiny coat of paint. This five-looping scream machine continues to rank as a fan favorite as it approaches its 30th birthday.
The parks are currently hiring for the 2022 season. Applicants age 14 and older can text FUN to 732-307-6688 or complete an application at www.sixflagsjobs.com. More than ten diverse departments offer exciting opportunities with flexible hours and great perks, and many jobs start at $15 per hour.
New in 2022, Six Flags announces a three-tiered Pass Program focused on maximizing the value and experience for guests. The Thrill Seeker Pass is perfect for frequent home park visitation. The Extreme Pass is ideal for live-on-the-edge thrills all year, without blockout dates. The Ultimate Pass provides the best value for everything offered; it includes all of the advantages of an Extreme Pass, plus more. For additional benefits and savings, with the purchase of an Extreme or Ultimate Pass, two Junior Passes will be given for each one of the passes purchased. The Junior Pass is for guests under 42”. For more information on these best offers, visit www.sixflags.com.

  • Jr. Thrillseekers – Great Adventure will complete the two-year renovation of this action-packed section. Formerly Safari Kids, the park’s largest family area will offer eight rides, all perfect for parents to enjoy with their little ones, like Lil’ Devil Coaster—the kiddie counterpart to Jersey Devil Coaster—and Barnstormer, returning for 2022.  The section will also feature shopping, dining, and new, shaded seating;
  • The Return of Medusa – Thrill seekers will delight in the return of the snake-haired Gorgon to Frontier Adventures—a seven-looping beast unveiled in 1999 as the world’s first floorless, top-rail roller coaster, Medusa. The ride was re-branded to BIZARRO™ 10 years later, but will return in its original form with a new color palette, logo, and Gold Rush-era backstory;
  • Single Rider Lines – To shorten wait times by filling in every available seat, single rider lines enable rides to operate with the maximum number of guests. This feature will be added to Jersey Devil Coaster, El Toro, Nitro and Medusa;
  • Q SMART Technology – To improve the guest experience through enhanced ride line speed and efficiency, Six Flags will transition its’ THE FLASH™ Pass Q-bot to mobile Q SMART technology. From the convenience of a mobile phone and the ease of an app, with the touch of a button guests will be able to maximize their time in the park, spending less time waiting in line and more time enjoying rides, dining, shopping, and entertainment;
  • Enhanced Mobile App – A new mobile app feature that allows guests to add their pass to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet will expedite the front gate experience and reduce wait time;
  • “Wow” Moments – In 2022, more emphasis will be placed on creating “Wow” moments through fun and memorable guest interactions, beautiful landscaping views, additional seating for relaxation, and a massive, new marquee on Rt. 537;
  • Restaurant Makeovers – Two of the park’s largest indoor restaurants, Yum Yum Café and Granny’s, will reopen with an entirely new interior look. New floors, décor, menu boards, and traffic flow will enhance the dining experience;
  • Fatburger® – Since 1952, Fatburger has been serving delicious, made-to-order food. Now with more than 200 locations worldwide, Fatburger will deliver hot and fresh treats like juicy burgers, creamy milkshakes, and crispy onion rings to guests in Adventure Alley;
  • New Dining Options – The park will expand its culinary options with freshly roasted rotisserie chicken added to the menu at Granny’s, freshly-brewed coffee creations at Sweet Treats, proudly serving Starbucks® and many additional high quality offerings;
  • Family Restroom – To better accommodate the needs of all guests, the theme park will introduce two new family restrooms to the Adventure Alley section;
  • Volta Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – Compatible with all electric vehicles, units will be available in the theme park, water park and safari parking lots;
  • New Pavilions – The park’s high-tech, touchless security screening entry area and the popular Johnny Rocket’s outdoor dining patio will sport new wooden pavilion shade coverings;
  • Summer Vibes Festival – As sun-kissed dreams come to life, guests will drench themselves in a kaleidoscope of color at this new, summer festival, which will run July 16 to August 14. Mouth-watering treats, beat-the-heat beverages, bold, eye-popping spectacles, live entertainment, and colorful curiosities will immerse guests in the reverie of summer;
  • New Animal Adventures – The Wild Safari’s animal care team welcomes three new giraffe calves, a new male rhinoceros, and an array of spring babies. The Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure will feature an entirely new audio tour guests can stream from any mobile device and an expanded, three-lane roadway with five newly paved miles;

Product Spotlight….Coke’s New Flavor “Starlight”
Picture
Picture
Advertisement says…
From the furthest reaches of the galaxy, Coca‑Cola Starlight is arriving.
The flavors of unknown stars twirl together with the great taste of
Coca‑Cola for an experience unlike any other. Where will it transport you?
Unexpectedly indulgent, Starlight’s red hue sparkles with a
cooling sensation that tastes like magic. Prepare to drink the stars.

What the internet says…
…the same ingredient that gives raspberries their flavor.
This red-tinted drink "inspired by space" describes Coca-Cola Starlight as having
"notes reminiscent of stargazing around a campfire"

I enjoyed it…
It was like Cherry Coke light for me.
It did not taste heavy on the sugar.
Asking around, everyone tastes a little something different.

Meet Sawyer…our rare male Rhino!
The white rhinoceros or square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) is the largest extant species of rhinoceros.
It has a wide mouth used for grazing and is the most social of all rhino species.
The white rhinoceros of today was said to be likely descended from Ceratotherium praecox which lived around 7 million years ago.
It has been suggested that the modern white rhino has a longer skull than Ceratotherium praecox to facilitate consumption of shorter grasses which resulted from the long-term trend to drier conditions in Africa.
White rhinoceroses are found in grassland and savannah habitat. Herbivore grazers that eat grass, preferring the shortest grains, the white rhinoceros is one of the largest pure grazers.

It drinks twice a day if water is available, but if conditions are dry it can live four or five days without water.
It spends about half of the day eating, one third resting, and the rest of the day doing various other things.
White rhinoceroses, like all species of rhinoceros, love wallowing in mud holes to cool down.

Sawyer is on the right!

Motivational….

The lecture hall was nearly full, and I looked out onto a sea of eager faces. Then, from the back row, a young man called out, “So, what do I need to get your job one day?”
The question came as I wrapped up my guest lecture at a university a few years ago—and I welcomed it. “Clearly you all have potential or else you wouldn’t be here,” I told the students. “But how can you exceed that potential?”

Not one of them could guess the answer I had in mind.

“It takes an abundance of opportunity,” I suggested, and then the discussion went to another level.

We all sit at the intersection of potential and opportunity. Potential is the common denominator—we all have potential. But it will remain a mere fraction—substantially less than one—without the numerator of opportunity. After all, leadership is, in essence, creating opportunities for others.

The challenge, though, is that potential is about tomorrow. Opportunity is about today.

Our progress is seldom linear. Life is full of setbacks: the time we got cut from the team. We didn’t make the school band or get cast in the play. We didn’t get the job we wanted—or the promotion went to someone else. In those moments, it can feel as if someone else controls our fate.

But who’s to say what someone can or cannot do? Only with opportunity will we ever know.

So where does potential meet opportunity? With leadership. It’s all of us—and it’s up to us, as leaders, as colleagues, as mentors, sponsors and coaches, and as friends and family members. Inspiring others to believe, investing the time so others can achieve.

I was barely a teenager and just learning to drive when my dad took me to the community college parking lot to practice. My dad’s car was a “three on the tree”—a three-speed transmission with the shifter on the steering column. I can still remember the H pattern—first gear, second gear, third gear, reverse, with neutral in between.

I tried and tried to get it right, but that old car just sputtered and lurched, then stalled. I wanted to give up, but Dad told me to pull over. Then he put his hand over mine and led me through the gears: “Give it a little gas. Ease off the clutch …” Soon, I was driving solo, and Dad was sitting back and enjoying the ride around the parking lot—a smile on his face.

That’s what we all need today—for ourselves and others—with an “H pattern” that unleashes potential and puts opportunity into gear. Here are some thoughts:
  • Humility. Humility begets self-awareness, and self-awareness begets growth. With humility, we see beyond our own insularity into a bigger world. Self-awareness means not only knowing ourselves, but also how and where we can surround ourselves with others who are strong where we are weak. Always and everywhere, humility is the grace that constantly whispers, “It’s not about you.”
  • Hunger. All of us have two choices. We can go with the crowd—the path of least resistance. Or we tap into our purpose—and our hunger for that purpose. Namely, our drive. That’s why of all the qualities I look for in new employees, one of the big ones is hunger. Hunger manifests in many ways, starting with learning agility—the No. 1 predictor of success that’s all about applying past experiences and lessons learned to new challenges and first-time opportunities. Or, as I call it, knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do. Hunger also fuels mental agility—embracing complexity, making fresh connections, examining problems in new ways, and staying curious. Hunger encourages people agility—being open to diverse viewpoints and challenging preconceived notions. And finally, it empowers change agility to move beyond “this is the way we’ve always done things.” Indeed, hunger is the bridge that takes us from potential alone into the fullness of opportunity.
  • Hustle. This is the other big quality—because hustle quashes pedigree every time. It’s what turns possibilities into opportunities. But here’s the caveat—no one can teach us hustle. But we know it when we see it. Our research indicates that there are several signposts of potential—and all of them point to hustle. Drive and motivation. Awareness of strengths and blind spots. Experience and our track record of accomplishments. Learning agility. Capacity for logic and reasoning. Leadership traits that propel our advancement. And, on top of all that, knowing how to manage our career derailment risks. Hustle is the proverbial first foot on the field, last one off.
  • Heart. And if there’s a fourth gear—topping off our H pattern—it’s this one. Heart speaks to having the courage to undertake the journey—and the humanness to meet others where they are and bring them along. For leaders, heart speaks not only to passion and compassion, but also as importantly to authenticity and vulnerability. It’s a reminder that what we do is not who we are. And, with St. Valentine’s Day around the corner, the story of this long-ago saint brings additional meaning to heart. Among all the various myths, common themes stand out around selflessness and service to others. In one story, while St. Valentine was imprisoned, he restored the sight of his jailor’s daughter. Talk about helping someone rediscover their potential to live a life of greater opportunity! These are the times for leaders to tap into their heart for emotion and courage, instead of relying only on their heads—rational and strategic. Indeed, the heart is where inspiration lives and breathes.

It's true that we’re all in the “why,” “what,” “how,” and “when” business. But ultimately, we must be in the business of bringing together potential and opportunity—for others.
